Denise Grünstein (1950–2023) was based in Stockholm, Sweden. Since the early 2000’s she mostly focused on staged photography with a woman as the leading character. Her work contains references to the 19th century romantic paintings and the 20th century surrealism. In her pictures, Grünstein often created a strange world where beauty meets disharmony. Her photographs are easily recognizable for their characteristic and highly personal expression on the borderline between fantasy and reality.
When the National Museum's museum building was emptied of both art and office
furnishings for renovation, Denise Grünstein was given the opportunity to create
an art project in the empty building in early 2014.
It became the 1866 picture suite, which refers to the museum's opening year.
